My own daughter is 11 and emotionally mature for her age, and I read this book WITH her, but I am also very open about talking about sex with both of my prepubescent kids. As a former middle school teacher, I would definitely NOT share it with a classroom full of middle school kids who come from different home backgrounds holding different attitudes about sex. Since I read this book out loud with my 2 kids, I was able to interject explanations along the way and answer any questions that they might have. I would not recommend this for just anyone; you have to judge through the emotional maturity of your reader.(less)

My mother-in-law is considering getting this book for my 12-year-old daughter. Based on the reviews I've read, I'm not sure how this serious material is presented and if she can handle it. She loved learning about Malala this year, which is why I think Grandma thought this would be interesting to my daughter. YOUR THOUGHTS?

If she's every seen a rated R movie, then she already has been exposed to things adults say she shouldn't be exposed to.

I also think that children in the US need to be aware of the world issues that affect children outside the US.

However, the 12-year old should only read this book with an adult and she needs to already know about sex. This is a great book for a frank and open discussion of marriage, sex, and issues girls and women face around the world.

If the adults aren't ready to deal with these issues, then they shouldn't present them. Trust me. I teach middle school. The children are ready to deal with these issues.(less)
