It also introduces Alan, gives you the beginning portion of Jack's character arc, and contains the beginnings of their relationship arc. You'd be missing out both plot-wise and character-wise on worthwhile setup for book 3(less)

So book 2 does have a very diff…moreI wouldn't call book 2 a disaster, more like, the narration in each book fits more closely with the primary character. So book 2 does have a very different narrative feel, because Maud is coded (or, I inferred that she was coded) as neurodiverse, ADHD-inclined. Approaching the different styles with that assumption may make the reading easier.

That said, don't skip book 2, it's a must for tying the characters together.(less)
