The second book advances the overarching magic plot in larger strides. It also introduces Alan, gives you the beginning portion of Jack's character arc, and contains the beginnings of their relationship arc. You'd be missing out both plot-wise and character-wise on worthwhile setup for book 3(less)

So book 2 does have a very diff…moreI wouldn't call book 2 a disaster, more like, the narration in each book fits more closely with the primary character. So book 2 does have a very different narrative feel, because Maud is coded (or, I inferred that she was coded) as neurodiverse, ADHD-inclined. Approaching the different styles with that assumption may make the reading easier.

That said, don't skip book 2, it's a must for tying the characters together.(less)
