is it necessary to read the first book in the series to appreciate this one?

Jessica yes and no. The story likely could be read and understood as a standalone. The book does a good job at recapping the events from the previous book...

However, I would not recommend reading it without having first read the kind worth killing. The first book is (in my opinion) the superior of the two books and you will spoil yourself for that story if you read this one first. (less)

Who was the dark haired woman that Lily saw going into Henry's apartment (to feed the cat apparently). Lily thought it was a sister but it wasn't ever really explained. Did I miss something?
