Even some of Baum's other fantasy stories like "…moreThere are actually 40 of what are considered "canon" Oz books (they're known as "The Fabulous Forty). Even some of Baum's other fantasy stories like "Queen Zixi of Ix" and "The Magical Monarch of Mo" technically became Oz stories when the countries of Ix and Mo were added to the lands around the Deadly Desert. Then there's "The Woggle-Bug Book" and "Little Wizard Stories of Oz" and a newspaper strip that ran in 1901.

Much as the introductions in several of the Oz books have Baum essentially BEGGING for his readers to stop asking for more Oz so he could devote more time to other tales, as has been mentioned, he knew upon which side his bread was buttered, and wrote plays, movies (long before Judy Garland came along) etcetera.

And people have been writing Oz stories all along. There are now hundreds of them.(less)
