Does Nathaniel ever grow and become a better person in respect to realizing the oppression of the magicians is not beneficial. Does he ever redeem himself in finally showing any compassion for the common people or does he remain the obnoxious pimple he was in the first book?

Are there other fantasy novels with characters like Nathaniel/John Mandrake as lead? I kind of liked him despite his failures but have not found any other book with this kind of character not portrayed in a bad light.
