Strange gods and/or rituals- well, it uses a lot of religious imagery, like The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and the main character is sometimes said to be the son of Herne (Hoern? I don't quite remember), who is the forest god. Also there's some splinter groups that have weird rituals and are generally looked down on.(less)
