What was your favorite relationship in the book and why?

Mary Ann G. I love the feisty and caring banter between the men--Col and Pete and Ulysses and Cressy and Massimo. All of it.

I wonder why Sarah Winman chose to omit the quotation marks. It was not distracting, as it was in Wolf Hall, which I did not finish for that reason. I know about James Joyce not using them in Ulysses (or ever), but I feel there is more behind it than just an homage. Thoughts?

Deborah I think sometimes authors eliminate them to make the reader feel more a part of the conversation. The quotation marks set off each characters' words and also give the impression that the author--and the reader--are eavesdroppers instead of participants. It really makes no difference to me, however.(less)
