It mentions that General Llorente was part of Maximilian's army. During that time they were fighting against the Mexican republic forces to institute a french monarchy in the country. Fuentes drew many similarities between Charlotte of Belgium (the Archduke Maximilian of Austria's wife) and Consuelo. I wrote my Spanish Studies capstone on how Fuentes used this historical similarity between old systems and new influences to compare with the situation of Consuelo. The French were trying to keep hold of monarchal power (one of the oldest systems of government) meanwhile democracy (relatively modern in the West) was beginning to break down those old systems. This is similar to how Consuelo is grasping on to her youth and the past and refuses to come to terms with modernity and change. (less)
