Into That Darkness: An Examination of Conscience is Gitta Sereny's biography/exploration of Franz Stangl, the commandant of Treblinka, based on interviews with him and his family. Into That Darkness: From Mercy Killing to Mass Murder might be an earlier edition, because in the book Sereny does describe Stangl's experience in the T4 gassings/ "euthanasia" of disabled people before he was appointed to Treblinka. I'm not an expert, but the impression I got from reading Into That Darkness: An Examination of Conscience was that a lot of the staff who were involved in the so-called mercy killings of disabled people were transferred to work on the "Final Solution."(less)
