What's the animal cruelty/death extent? Excited to read this, but I noticed those content warnings on StoryGraph (I always check that in advance now, because I like to opt out of reading about that)... is the animal stuff incidental/fleeting or more substantial/graphic?

In addition to the birds the other folks mentioned, there's some brief nasty stuff that happens to a mouse. But birds, mouse, neither really lingered on or described in too much detail, and do recommend the book!(less)
