I have enjoyed tracing the origins of places and items in the Rampart series. Some of them are easy to follow, e.g., Bermagem, Half-Axe, quaran time. But I haven't been able to work out where "red tally", describing a small military force, came from. Anyone have ideas for the evolution of this term?

I'm sure this is a strange question but when I read, "And then he died. Murdered by a waitress who hid a grenade inside a soup tureen. Her last words were 'Eat this, you feckless bastard.'" I had the strangest feeling I had read this exact phrase somewhere else. Does anyone else know if this is from some other work?
