My son just started reading this - I mistakenly thought it was one of Alexander Mccall Smith's children's books. He's only 8 - but quite an advanced reader for an 8 year old (my son, not Alexander Mccall Smith!) Do I need to take it off him? Does it turn dark at some point?

It is for a slightly older audience to appreciate it fully but props to your son if he's such an advanced reader and derives pleasure from it! I don't think Alexander McCall Smith's books ever turn dark; his alacrity is something I enjoy tremendously; but despite being a very avid reader since the age of 10, I don't know how much I would have enjoyed, or rather, appreciated this book until my mid-twenties.
