Of course it could all be a massive coincidence (but I don't think so)!

I don't think you need to have read the other books but it adds background and a little mystery.

If you like GatS then it's worth reading the book of the ancestor trilogy while you wait for book 2.(less)

Without spoilers, this book has a plot point that makes almost all of his trilogies related.

In terms of order, you could do it in two different orders:

Order 1

1. The Broken Empire Trilogy
2. The Red Queen's War Trilogy
3. Book of the Ancestor Trilogy
4. Book of the ice Trilogy (this one)

or

Order 2

1. Book of the Ancestor Trilogy
2. The Broken Empire Trilogy
3. The Red Queen's War Trilogy
4. Book of the ice Trilogy (this one)

As far as I am aware, his Impossible Times trilogy is unrelated to this series.

Personally I would recommend Order 1 (this is also the order of publication).(less)
