On the scale of YA to adult, where does this book place as compared to Empire of Sand?

Is there a real-life model/inspiration for the Hirana? I had trouble visualizing it, particularly what it meant when characters would "climb" the Hirana. My mental image kept shifting from them rappelling up a vertical wall like Adam West and Burt Ward, to hiking up a mountain with packs on their backs except the entire mountain is a temple??
