S.E. Hinton has long been harshly critical of people who write fanfiction and who "dare" to interpret her characters as LGBTQ+, despite having many LGBTQ+ fans who see elements of themselves in these characters. She belittles them by calling them "little girls" and generally shows that, despite claiming to have LGBTQ+ friends, she is not a friend of the community.
The above referenced tweet is clearly S.E. exercising the power and privilege she has to beat down an author who dares to find some little inspiration in her works. If there was truly any "rip-off" happening here that would be a matter for her lawyers, so this smacks of an author being told that there is no grounds to sue and pouting about it on twitter.
The blurbs indicate that the story in no way resembles the plot of The Outsiders, so S.E. posting this tweet that offers none of that context just to whip her more rabid fans into a frenzy is reckless.
Tobly McSmith is a trans author who wrote a book about a trans boy that, I suspect, names himself after a character he admires. Trans authors and trans stories are already at such a disadvantage to get published that Hinton does not need to pile on. Especially before the book is even published. I would be surprised if Mr. McSmith remains as big a fan after the backlash that he has received. (less)
