I don't understand how the victims were rendered helpless before he was able to kill them. couldn't have been the prosecco, as he opened a brand new bottle and drank from it himself. ??? was there something in the bottom of the glass the victim drank from?

Ian The prosecco was laced with fentanyl, so they were drinking a mix of alcohol and fentanyl.

The mechanism of putting fentanyl in the victim's drink wasn't really explained, however, the killer, Carl Henderson, brought his own champagne flutes when he poured the drinks, so we assume the fentanyl was already in the victim's glass in some way, but not the killer's.
At the autopsies, a query was raised as to the unusual occurrence of fentanyl in the stomach of two of the victim's as well as the bloodstream. (less)
