I just started this book and I am confused about the timeline of the opening chapter. It says " September 1962" and that the book was published in 1956. But then goes on to say that Peterson was in his 40's in 1956 and if still alive would be pushing 70. How is this possible if it's just 6 years later? Is this a typo, should be 1946? Also, mention of agents being "42" would set current date at '62. Did I miss somethng

Molly Yes, you missed something. It was in the future looking back at events that happened 20 years ago. It is explained at the end of the book.
