Did anyone find Michael, the 11-year-old, as insufferable as I did, which almost made the book unreadable for me? Maybe I am too old, like Noah, to understand him.
Betty Ann I felt that she masterfully explores the current generation gap. Michael is at times, unbearable but also intuitive, talented and bright.

I would like to get to know this author's work and judging from the comments below, I'm sure I won't be disappointed. Would you all advise starting with Akin or Room ? Thanks,, P.S. I'm not a great reader so not familiar with Donoghue, just half Irish so I am biased :)
Charlie Room was absolutely amazing. Also loved Slammerkin (sp?) which is set in the UK.

Was the setup credible? Would a social worker prefer to send a child abroad, away from all that’s familiar, with an elderly man he's never met and is unaccustomed to children, rather than in state foster care? Is that an indictment of US social services?
