Do people need to read M. L. Wang's other Theonite books before they read this one?

M.L. Wang Not at all! While SoK takes place in the same universe as the Theonite Series, it is a standalone story with its own self-contained plot.

Is there a pattern to the dialogue that is in italics versus the dialogue that isn't? I'm about two thirds through the book and I can't seem to find out why they were printed like that.
