What is up with the random Italian words peppered throughout this book? I study Italian so I understand many of them, but I still find it jarring as I try to read. Is the entire book like this?

I too found it jarring, but not as much as I would have found actual grammatical errors, and certainly not enough to stop reading. My guess is that she did it to add some atmosphere or remind the reader that the characters were speaking Italian — if it even was Italian at that point. I don’t remember whether Italy was still a collection of city states in 1577. I thought it was unnecessary, but I got used to it.(less)
