Should I read this book as the first in the trilogy or the last one? I read Red Mars then grabbed this and I recognize some characters and some are new. Also what's the deal with the Paul Bunyan myth? I know who Paul Bunyan is but I can't connect still how the story of Paul Bunyan came to Mars, since the story was already circulating before the first hundred came to live there.

At some point in the main trilogy the Paul Bunyan myth is retold as a new martian myth (I can't recall exactly when), the short story account will make a lot more sense in that context.(less)

Unanswered Questions (1)

I read this wonderful book 20 years ago & am now re-reading. But I've just learned that the book contains a story called Discovering Life, which is not in my copy, published here in the UK by Voyager (Harper Collins) in 1999. Does anyone know if this is a difference between the UK & US editions? Or if the book was revised later & reprinted with an extra story or stories? If so, I will buy a new copy.
