In what year does this book take place? All the reviews refer to early 1900's. Quite a difference between 1900-1914, 1914-1918 the war years, 1918-1920 pre roaring 20's, and the roaring twenties. The cover pictures look like 1900-1910 or maybe even the 1890's.

Do I need to read these in order. As far as I can tell is that there are 17 books in the series, in total?
Eva Smith Reading the books in order would be ideal. I started with Book No. 4 and then backtracked and read Books 1 through 3.
