It's a standalone, right? Or is it gonna suddenly become "first in a series" after I read it and come across some sort of cliffhanger at the end? (Someone who has read it already, please tell it doesn't have any of those and can be read as a standalone)

No plans to write any more books in this universe, whatsoever. That said:
1) There's a short story that follows a couple of the supporting characters and shows what happened to them after the book ended. It's going to be published online (for free) in February.
2) This book has been optioned as a TV show by Sony and Mom de Guerre Productions, and if the show actually gets on the air, we would definitely try to continue the story after the end of the book. (If the show lasts more than a couple seasons.)(less)

does anyone know whether this is in the same world as a short story or novella by the same author? The world seems awfully familiar but I can't find the story I am remembering. It had a dark side, a day side, and people in the protagonists' father's generation rode out as "knights" to fight the inhabitants of the dark side. I've just started this book. But the familiarity is really bugging me.
