The author makes this clear in his Preface, and the tone suggests that he abridged it with strong reservations - he compares it to da Vinci being asked to trim a painting to fit a frame! I will be seeking out a copy of the original unabridged version, published in 1998, and probably by a US publisher - the 2003 abridged version by Canongate Books is printed in infinitesimally tiny print. I will be wary of anything from this publisher in future!(less)
