I thought it was awesome! This isn't meant to be literary fiction that makes us think deeply. This is a fun thriller and this was all that. I think if you want to think more profoundly about this, my take is that the accident was just that, an accident and happened when she was just a kid. And Amy's parents handling of the situation erred on abusive. But her choice to protect her friend and save this other kid from what was happening to him was her finally using her own voice and not playing the victim anymore. It was coming full circle. She had the chance to change the life of someone basically the same age as she was when her life took a turn. She stepped up and interceded. (less)
