Perhaps someone here can help me. Why on earth would Miles’ family not help Ronnie and her son? I remember them as wealthy and fond of her (Monstrous Regiment). I must have missed something because this doesn’t make sense to me.

Early in Ch. 2, we learn that the Earl of Pewsley "became known by the jocular nickname of 'Lord Waterloo' for his idiosyncratic habit of commuting up and down between London and Surrey." Will someone, probably British, please explain the allusion to this bemused Yank? Has it to do with Waterloo station?
