I believe many commentator's think that Churchill's THE WORLD CRISIS is his greatest work, but the popularity of THE SECOND WORLD WAR, volumes of which were coming out as they were written and five of which had already appeared, probably influenced the Academy's choice. It is a FIRST HAND account of WW2 by one of the key protagonists, and it is littered with letters, memos and other correspondence - again, first hand. This alone makes it a hugely worthy endeavour, even though it is obviously filled with Churchill's own perspective and view of events.

I don't know why he took up the monumental task - presumably because he has a unique and hugely important perspective. I believe we should all be glad he did.(less)
