asked:
How impartial is this book really? Does anybody have an idea of why Sir Churchill took up the monumental task of chronicling the greatest war ever fought?

Did anyone ever claim it was impartial? It is a FIRST HAND account of WW2 by one of the key protagonists, and it is littered with letters, memos and other correspondence - again, first hand. This alone makes it a hugely worthy endeavour, even though it is obviously filled with Churchill's own perspective and view of events.
I don't know why he took up the monumental task - presumably because he has a unique and hugely important perspective. I believe we should all be glad he did.
