Hi Julia!

Thanks so much for asking about the synopsis of The Great Alone. The truth is that we don't have it written yet and I want it to be just right when I send it out into the world. Somehow, it's easier to write 150,000 words than a handful of description. For now, I can say it's about a family living on the edge of civilization in Alaska in the 1970's, but keep watching. As soon as I have more scoop, I'll post it! I hope you've entered to win an early reading copy...good luck! xok(less)

There are many unnatural reactions in this book. I don't think a 7 year old would leave his Mom (In the jail cell scene) and happily go with a stranger, and I don't think he would take to his father immediately, with or without scars. I don't mind that this wasn't accurately portrayed in the novel, because it wouldn't have added much.
I do mind that at Leni's reunion with Matthew, there was almost no reaction from Leni. At this point in the book it feels like we're just flying to the end. The timing gets weird; Leni arrived in Alaska, was arrested, met with Tom Walker, was detained all day in a cell, went to court, appeared before a Judge and all was dismissed. Then, she goes to the Walker compound has her reunion with Matthew, everyone goes fishing until 9pm and somehow she still has time/energy to go to her old home by herself. Shortly after she arrives at her home, Matthew appears and says something like "alone is overrated" and suddenly all the neighbors appear on boats to say goodbye and Leni and Matthew and MJ are on a boat pouring Cora's ashes into the sea and it's morning? What? I wish the novel didn't go off the rails this way in the end, it was distracting and annoying to have to re-read to see if I missed something. Anyone else notice this? (less)
