Calling Manny a man-whore is too simple of a classification for a character that was well developed in this novel. As other readers have commented, Manny's desire to feel safe, to feel loved, to feel understood, even the need to feel taken care of, makes it a bit easier to understand the possible reasons why he had affairs. Esther Perel talks about these issues in her books/podcast/TED talk. I'm going to ignore the fact that you thought he was Mexican instead of Ecuadorian after reading the 400+ pg. book. (less)

Starting on page 90, about 1/4 of the way in, Chapter 3, titled 'Crote Six,' is in third person omniscient, right before we have Lucia's first person chapter. Honestly, the only purpose I see to these switches is purely for arbitrary, literary flourishes, to simply add a change of pace to an otherwise dreary story. Take my answer with a grain of salt though, I'm apparently in the minority that didn't find this book to be all that amazing, and it is partly because of arbitrary stylistic decisions like this.
