Overall, I'd say it's a grown-up version of Scooby-Doo as well as other teen detective stories, for those of us who grew up on them.

Kerri is clearly a combination of Daphne and Velma, and Peter a version of Fred, but neither Nate nor Andy is like Shaggy. Tim is very different from Scooby personality-wise - like a real dog! - but given how much Weimaraners look like Scooby (despite Scooby being a Great Dane), I think that's a reference too.(less)
Colin I haven't read John Dies at the End of Welcome to Night Vale but I did really enjoy the Lockwood & Co. series by Jonathan Stroud despite having to tak…moreI haven't read John Dies at the End of Welcome to Night Vale but I did really enjoy the Lockwood & Co. series by Jonathan Stroud despite having to take breaks at times so I'm wondering if I'd like this book since I adore Scooby-Doo & really enjoyed Famous Five when I was a kid.

Scooby-Doo is about my threshold for scary stuff normally though.(less)
