The spelling and grammar is not perfect which some people care about when it comes to their kids (there was a whole issue with June B Jones books about that). There are also a lot of "dam" jokes that come across as cussing and at least one "crap".

There are some adult themes. There is a lot about death ,what it means to want to die, and what happens after death. The bear asks the aliebn if the bees really want to die. A bee comes and explains that it is a really difficult decision to sting someone and that they only do it because they are scared and full of love for other bees. It seemed a bit dark for younger children. There is a lot of talk about what art is and what it isn't. There is a scene where a pumpkin admits he had nightmares about being lobotomized and having his heart set on fire (amusing way to talk about jack-o-lanterns for adults, but might be a bit much for younger children).

There is a scene that can be viewed as sexual between a butterfly and a flower. The aliebn is asked to stop looking, all the bees run off. It is heavily implied that the flower and the butterfly wanted alone time, but nothing is shown.

I always suggest reading the book first to see your view on the book before allowing a small child to read it as everyone has a different view of what is and is not appropriate for children. My library has it shelved as an adult book. (less)
