The ending suggests, though, that the two of them actually live equally, so I think what appeals Hannibal about Clarice isn't the possibility of killing her, it's the kindred spirit he sees in her.

It's not totally consistent with the events of the books, but rather a new exploration of the characters from them. In my opinion it's best to read the books first, so you can recognise the references the show makes, but the show does stand on its own and is very much its own thing.(less)
