Carys really does not have a romantic relationship (there’s a hint of one), but Andreus does have one. Andreus’ romantic relationship does drive some plot points (his trust in Imogen, his love interest, influences some of his decisions), but the main focus of the novel remains on the twins’ relationship and the competition for the throne. So, the romance aspect in Andreus’ chapters might fall more into the 3-5 range for some chapters, but the romance aspect in Carys chapters always remains verily low (0-1).

Maybe he’s supposed to be an anti-hero or a foil to the selfless Carys. Unfortunately, he gets a lot worse before he gets better, and it may be just to help with his character development. But if I remember correctly, he starts being a somewhat decent character 50-75% of the way through book 2, so he does improve a little bit, it just takes awhile. Anyway, you’re definitely not alone in hating his character.
