Was her lousy mother and search for her father - much less that whole digression into Haiti - really important to the plot? So...an unnecessary first half and a disappointing ending - doesn't leave a whole lot left to love!(less)

The final quarter steps in the land of crazy, and even if you buy has outlandish explanation of everything, it fails to wrap up the story. It just stops. Agreed?

It bothered me intensely that I didn't understand Rachel giving Kessler back his hat, being shot and having her backbone shattered, and...next paragraph walking out of the building. Had to read this four times, and guess it was an authorial error. Or internal dialogue. Or...?

Debbi It was an imagining based on the terrible fear she wax experiencing.

Is this a typica, Lehane book? I really liked the first two-thirds (character development and mystery) but had to skip some parts of the last bit (thriller?) because I don't enjoy the gore. So, I'm wondering which of his other books I might like to read as well?
