There are a lot of minor, and not so minor, details and emotional notes that would be lost on a new to the series reader.

This book takes place before Rachel and Trent Jr. were born. The guy in this book is our favorite elf's father and he was a real jerk as numerous characters have mentioned throughout the Rachel Morgan series.(less)

The series is more about relationships---between friends, family, partners, enemies, and lovers. They're about exploring what it means to be human so yeah, there is some romance, some sex, lots of humor and butt-kicking action, arguments, misunderstandings, and childish behavior. I've enjoyed them.
