It's an excellent standalone book and would be great for a family to read together.

It must be #4 in terms of the internal chronology, because it's number 2 in terms of publishing order. Number 1 in terms of publishing order, Song of the Trees, is a sweet 20-minute read for younger children, not an entire novel.

Some parts are quite violent and upsetting, but never gratuitously or unrealistically violent. If you have kids under 12 or so, you may want to keep a chapter ahead of them so you'll know what's coming up.(less)
