The main character, Dr. Fischelson, lived a philosophic but barren life pursuing philosophic ideals like Spinoza. However, the "Market Street" is the existential condition that he had to reside. The story is an optimistic view of how, as human beings, we can find a whole life through both ideals and human affection. (less)
