Unanswered Questions (3)

If they aren’t married, Salvatore and Lucia then her father sold her to be a mistress? I don’t understand the underlying premise of the book, the contract. If sold to NOT be a wife why would they care about virginity? I would think the unwed mother would’ve been the better choice for that position. And if not married why would she be loyal to them? And why wouldn’t he still be looking for a wife? Why allow college?
