There are also a lot of reoccurring characters, each with their own backstory with Maisie (13 books' worth of backstory, to be exact!). You might miss a lot of the subtext that makes these books so freaking great.(less)

Vicky Reinke We assume that because Rosie called him to warn him that Maisie was getting closer to the killer and she (Rosie) would not cover for him, he panicked…more We assume that because Rosie called him to warn him that Maisie was getting closer to the killer and she (Rosie) would not cover for him, he panicked and killed both her and the housekeeper. If he killed the housekeeper first, that would drive Rosie to avenge her death. I thought Maisie did return to Rosie's house, but essentially she completed the final accounting with the presence of Rosie's brother at the home of her in-laws.

The novels are a c…moreI agree that it's best to read the Masie Dobbs books in sequence -- although I've skipped a few and need to fill in the blanks :-(. The novels are a carefully-wrought continuous story and Winspear excels at developing her characters' self-awareness, most notably Masie's, as the extended narrative over several decades evolves.(less)
