And I too noticed that the little hairbrush the kind teacher gave to Dawn went from pink to blue. I felt like I was watching the scene in "Sleeping Beauty" where the fairies are changing her dress color. (less)

She imagines this injury--possibly to explain the psychological/emotional damage she feels after the death of her father. The book notes that she really doesn't have anyone to talk with--her brother kind of ignores her, her mother is gone and her grandmother doesn't want to talk about it. I think she imagines this injury to explain to herself why she can't talk about the death (even though it's all she can think about).(less)
