There's plenty of whimsy and Gaiman's vivid imagination makes for some lovely scenery, but the narrative can border on incoherent at times. To appreciate the book is to treat it as an evocative work filled with fun, interesting ideas while excusing the fact that the execution isn't optimal.(less)

He was a version of Odin that people brought to America. So he was Odin, but after "splitting" from Odin, he went on to become his own thing, his version of the Norse god. He mutated and changed, and while still being the All-Father, a version of him, he was no longer the original, the source.

The Odin met at the end of the book, on the other hand, was the original, the template from which Wednesday was molded. He was not Wednesday, because Wednesday had went on to change, grow or diminish, and become something different after he was brought to America. (less)
