The Laura Guhrke story in this anthology seems very incomplete, as if it were lifted from a much longer story. The ending is so unsatisfactory. Was the father actually innocent as he claimed. Does anyone know if this has been excerpted from a full length novel or if she has written a follow up story explaining the outcome of the investigation?

I also had the suspicion that it was shortened from a full length novel, but it doesn’t appear so. The ending was not satisfying at all. I was hoping for another explanation than the father being guilty, like maybe he was framed or lying to protect someone, something. Ellie is so adamant that he is innocent, but then easily accepts his guilt based on a single look and doesn’t ask any questions or shed more than a single tear? Poor character development.(less)
