There could be a simple answer like maybe they didn't know how to tie good knots, but the author didn't address this question or how she kept the gun. A plot gap that could've easily been filled.(less)

How did Dean learn American Sign Language? If I read correctly, they were already living in the woods (i.e. out of all society) when his mother killed his father and cut out Dean's tongue. It clearly indicates he is not deaf, just mute. Toward the end it mentions he found an uncle who headed up a chapter of the Ntl Association of the Deaf, so perhaps his mom knew ASL to communicate w her brother?
