What age level would this fall into? Thinking about gifting for a ten year old and have read some of Brandon's other works, but have no idea about this series and if I will be getting my son something that is actually way above what is appropriate for his age.

I'm sure a 10 year old Could enjoy it but I don't think they are the target age group. The author's 'Alcatraz Vs.' series is his only childrens books as far as I know.
