You missed a very important plot point around pages 86-95. NOTE: My response contains a SPOILER although if you have read all the way to page 86 you can already guess what happened next.

Fiametta realizes that she is not tall enough to hit Thur over the head, and since he is acting nice, she lets him come into the room. She explains what happened the last few days and how the Innkeeper tried to take her magical ring as payment for the room. <spoiler>She claims that no one else can put the ring on. To prove it, she hands it over to Thur. He slips over his finger, but cannot remove it.

"A muleteer," she whispered still with that aghast look. "My ring has brought me a stinking muleteer? A big, stupid German lout--"

"Swiss," Thur corrected... (page 87)

She also realizes that Thur was apprenticed to her father, and by contract is now apprenticed to her. She makes a deal with him to escape the inn and return to the city. Thur decides to use his last savings to pay her bill, but when he goes downstairs, the Innkeeper is about to lead city guardsmen to her father's body. The Innkeeper notices Thur and asks if he has removed the "she-cat" from the room. Thur lies that she escaped down the road. Thur tries to buy the body with a few coins, but the Innkeeper has already made a "better bargain" with the guardsmen. And you know how that "better bargain" worked out.</spoiler>(less)
