After being the first African American graduate of the California Maritime Academy, in the deck department, I got my first third mate's job about four months after graduation on a SEDCO oil rig anchored in Alaska, but I didn't get my actual second mate's (navigator) job until 1983; seven years after graduation.

I appreciate you taking the time to read and review my book!

Hi Sheila S.,

Thanks for writing. I made you a friend a few minutes ago. Yes, I would be interested in being interviewed for the Fall News magazine and be given a book review. I received a write up in my union's magazine "The Master, Mates and Pilot" April-June issue, recently. I appreciate the interest from the American Merchant Marine Veterans organization.

I did write about our merchant marine and the fact that U.S. owned companies carry only 2% of the world's cargo and any positive comments about that fact will be good for our dwindling merchant marine, I'm sure you'll agree Sheila.

I'll email you as soon as I log out of goodreads.

Take care Sheila, Keith Lawrence (less)
