Altered Carbon, the first book is also different from the Netflix series of the same name. Reading the book doesn't not spoil the TV series, or vice versa, in my opinion. They're both enjoyable in their own mediums, with slightly different storylines.(less)

Humans are currently using astrogation maps created by Martians, and a unique part of Martian culture is that instead of seeing themselves all originating from a "homeworld" they considered each world they inhabited on equal footing with whichever planet they started with. That's the "hub" part of hub theory. The point is that we call them Martians because HUMANS first found them on Mars, but we don't (can't) know if they actually originated on Mars or if Mars was just a random colony in their empire.
