Before I commit, I would like to know if there is any difference between this and the Colony by A.J. Colucci? They sound quite similar.

Is this an ongoing series, or is it a duology?

This is a part 2 in a series apparently? I didn't know that when I bought the book. Will I need to read book 1 before this in order to know what is going on or can book 2 stand alone?

I read some reviews saying this book doesn't connect to the first one of the series; would I be able to read it as a stand-alone ?

Is there a term for when a fiction author refers to another work of fiction, and it suddenly jerks you out of the story by reminding you that you are reading a novel? Here are two examples from Invasive: "Sounds like a B-movie" and "like on that zombie show on TV". Making reference to a zombie TV show doesn't make the story more realistic, it just brings into awareness that I'm reading a piece of pulp fiction.
