I'm responding from the perspective of someone who loves Princess Leia. Here's a mixed bag of some my favorites with great female leads:
- "Shards of Honor" and "Barrayar" by Lois McMaster Bujold has a dynamic woman (Cordelia Naismith) in a marvelous space opera setting lifted above the level of others by the intelligence and compassion of the author. If you like these, there's a long list of "Vorkosigan Saga" books to enjoy.
- "The Lions of Al-Rassan" by Guy Gavriel Kay. This is kind of alt-history/fantasy. Also involves war, politics, religion, and the reaching across boundaries by men and women who society thinks should be enemies. One of my top three all time favorite books.
- The Dark Jewels trilogy (starting with "Daughter of the Blood") by Anne Bishop. A unique fantasy series with a focus on power and eroticism.
- "Into the Wilderness" by Sara Donati -- historical fiction (Has the best opening line I've ever read)
- "Godslayer" & "Banewreaker" by Jacqueline Carey - It's "Pardise Lost" crossed with "The Lord of the Rings" and the 'bad guys' are the heroes, and it should be terrible, but instead it's heartbreaking and beautiful.
- "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" by Alan Dean Foster -- The first Star Wars novel, published back before The Empire Strikes Back came out. Great Princess Leia novel. Bear in mind that George Lucas (whatever he said later) did not plan for Luke & Leia to be siblings when he started writing the trilogy.
- "Hook & Jill" by Andrea Jones. What happens when Wendy starts to grow up but Peter Pan won't -- and Hook offers her a different path out of girlhood besides going back to London. Definitely a book for grown-ups.
- "Devil's Fire" by Michael Tommerlin - a pirate novel with an unusual female protagonist. Grounded in the gritty reality of piracy, and not for the faint of heart, but a wonderful ride. Two other novels follow.
- "Flight of the Vajra" - by Serdar Yegulalp (GoodReads author). One of the most unique sci-fi novels I've ever read, with a non-traditional cast of characters, including a female religious leader who wants to take her faith in a new direction, and a fierce adolescent girl.
- "The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope" by Rhonda Riley. A farm girl in the 1950's(?) literally pulls a naked person from the mud during a huge storm. Who that person is, how they develop, and the relationship between the miraculous and the everyday makes this an unusual but very grounded story of love and life and mystery.(less)

(A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.)

Bloodline, however, is set about six years before The Force Awakens. And both books feature a character named Yendor. He was first introduced in Lost Stars, so that's another reason I'd recommend reading Lost Stars first. Yendor is supporting character in both books, but I liked him. Hope that helps. (less)
Suyapa The events in this book happen 5 years before The Force Awakens.
